Stand-Up for Something 2

So we attended Simmy the Trini's long awaited comedy show at Queen's Hall on Sunday March 10th. The whole event was well organized starting with parking. If you listened to Simmy's pre-show tips and arrived early you woulda get a bess park inside Queen's Hall. If you decided to be fashionably late then you ‘had was to’ park outside and fight up with the wrecker men dem.

The Queen's Hall lobby had sponsor booths set up with one giving out free chocolate samples…yes you heard me. Better yet was the fact the show started on time so if you're habitually tardy tell yuhself yuh go miss some of the fun.

I truly enjoyed the emcee, Philomena Alexis-Baptiste aka Philo, performance....she effortlessly had the crowd in stitches. Philo was a whole act by herself and kept the energy going. Even when she came to warn people about the wrecker it was so light and hilarious it took the audience a while to realize she was serious.

The cast included a number of local and international comedy personalities. The performances were vastly different so it didn't feel like it was just the same thing over and over like a Nailah and Skinny collab. I don't want to spoil the show for anyone so I won't sell out exactly what transpired but I will touch on a couple of the highlights for me.

The first was getting to meet the amazing Vaughnette Bigford in person. I hug she up tight tight and wanted to rub baby oil on that ball head. Ahem...let me compose myself....Talk about class and vocal ability.  Miss lady gave us two songs including a sweet jazz rendition of a classic soca that had me feeling like I was listening to Sade singing soca.

The other highlight was Kevin Soyer. This bloke is differently abled and his humor....well bai...I wasn't able. It was really different. I could only muster a few "wow" and "nah soldier". I thought my humor was dark but this bloke humor darker than the men Simmy tell we she like.

Which brings me to the headline act. First, let me just say Simmy the Trini humor is not for everyone. Do not bring your kids or church friends...unless they're spies for the SSA, then they'll probably be fine. While she was excellent, it's a lot of relationship and vagina humor so if that offends you then maybe just buy a ticket and pay it forward to one of your jammette friends like me.

All in all it was an enjoyable outing. For a brief (very brief) moment I felt like a real adult doing adult things. I mean I dress up nice (shiny cockroach killer shoes and all) on a Sunday to go Queen's Hall for a show....I feel like I should make a meme looking down on allyuh who wasn't there.
